Located northwest of Spokane, 65.5 square-mile Nine Mile Falls School District follows both sides of the Spokane River approximately 30 meandering miles from Seven Mile Road on its sourthern boundary to Scoop Mountain on the northern edge. Spokane & Stevens County residents are served by this district, which has grown from 60 students in 1996 to about 1,560. Population was 4,683 in the 1990 census, based on 1,743 homes. In 1998, over 3,000 homes received district mail.
Growth has boomed from residential, lake access "bedroom community" housing developments on both sides of the river and annexation of about 20 additional square miles of land in the Tum Tum area. Small businesses, farms and forests add to the diversity of family choices. Our school district is the largest employer. Maintaining "the rural character of the area" rates high priority on patrol polls. Many residential lots are one acre of more and allow horses, orchards, etc.
There are no incorporated towns in the district and few parks, extending the schools' roles to meet community social and recreational needs. Families are attracted by the recreational opportunities of 26-mile-long Lake Spokane (also known as Long Lake) access to five major ski areas and proximity of Spokane, the second largest city in Washington, with its subsequent employment opportunities and cultural amenities.
